Portuguesa

State in west-central Venezuela, north of Zamora; area 15,262 sq km/5,893 sq mi; population (1996) 720,865. Portuguesa consists mainly of ‘llanos’ (plains) drained by secondary tributaries of the River Orinoco. Guanare is the capital. The state, which is named after the River Portuguesa, is largely agricultural, with sugar, coffee, maize, and cocoa the chief products.
