Portumna

Market town in County Galway, Republic of Ireland; population (2002) 1,900. Portumna overlooks the River Shannon and Lough Derg, and is a fishing and boating centre. On the outskirts are the ruins of Portumna Castle, built 1609, once a stronghold of the earls of Clanricarde, and the 15th-century remains of a Dominican friary. Portumna forest park is a wildlife reserve.

The ruins of Derryhiveney Castle 6 km/4 mi north were built by Donal O'Madden in 1643.
