Portumna Castle

Large, semi-fortified Jacobean mansion at Portumna, County Galway, Republic of Ireland. It was built in the early 1600s for Richard Burke, 4th Earl of Clanricarde, who lived in England and died in 1635 without ever seeing the property. It is regarded as the finest of its kind in Ireland and was probably richly furnished in the French style, although an accidental fire in 1826 left it in ruins. It has been conserved by the Office of Public Works.
