Post Office

A traditional red letter box belonging to the Royal Mail, in the UK. The envelope did not make its first appearance until 1839, when it replaced the centuries-old custom of folding a letter, writing the address on the outer face, and sealing it with wax. The gummed-flap envelope was introduced in 1850.

Government department or authority with responsibility for postal services. Many post offices also offer other services, including financial services, passport and license applications, and telecommunications.

The United States Postal Service (USPS) is an independent government organization that was reorganized in 1971. It is headed by the Postmaster General. Some mail processing is done by privatized post offices in retail stores.
