Antsiranana| A town on a promontory of northern Madagascar, south of a bay of the same name; population (1990 54,400). Antsiranana is the second-largest town in Madagascar and is the capital of Antsiranana Province. It stands on a fine natural harbour which now exports cattle, coffee, vanilla, pepper, and cloves. Industries include shipbuilding and meat processing. Antsiranana was formerly a French naval base. There are naval yards, and cargo is shipped between coasters and larger vessels. The Andekelaka hydroelectric scheme provides electricity for the town. |
