Postel, Jon(athon) (1943–1998)

US computer programmer and Internet pioneer who managed the Internet Assigned Numbers Authority (IANA), which created an organized system of Internet names and addresses. A hugely influential figure in the development of the global computer network, Postel was involved with the Internet from its earliest inception, the ARPANET. Much of his subsequent work was concentrated on computer communication protocols.
