posthorn

Brass instrument akin to the bugle rather than the horn, used by postillions (coachmen) in the 18th and early 19th centuries. It has no valves and can therefore produce only the natural harmonics, which are coarse and penetrating in tone.

The posthorn is hardly ever used in serious music, but Johann Sebastian Bach imitated it on the harpsichord in his capriccio on his brother's departure, and Mozart scored parts for two in his German Dances K605 and in his Posthorn Serenade K320.
