Potemkin, Grigory Aleksandrovich (1739–1791)Russian politician. He entered the army and attracted the notice of Catherine II, whose friendship he kept throughout his life. He was an active administrator who reformed the army, built the Black Sea Fleet, conquered the Crimea in 1783, developed southern Russia, and founded the Kherson arsenal in 1788 (the first Russian naval base on the Black Sea).
