Capital of the Land (administrative region) of Brandenburg, Germany, on the River Havel southwest of Berlin; population (2005 est) 147,600. A leading garrison town and Prussian military centre, Potsdam was restored to its position of capital of Brandenburg with the reunification of Germany in 1990.

The Potsdam Conference took place here in 1945 and the Potsdam Sans Souci music festival is held annually in June. Museums include the Potsdam civic museum, several art galleries, a rapid-transit museum, and a museum of film.
