Potsdam

Town in St Lawrence County, northern New York State, USA, on the Raquette River, 48 km/30 mi east of Ogdensburg; population (1990 est) 16,800. The principal industries are dairy processing, electric power generation, and paper manufacturing. Educational foundations include the State University of New York College at Potsdam (1816) and Clarkson College of Technology (1896). Potsdam was settled in 1803 as a cooperative community, which was disbanded in 1810.

The village of Potsdam was separately incorporated in 1831. Sandstone quarrying was important until 1922.
