Stewart, Potter (1915-1985)

US jurist, appointed associate justice of the US Supreme Court 1958-81 by President Eisenhower. Seen as a moderate, he was known for upholding civil rights for minorities and for opinions on criminal procedure. He dissented in both Escabedo v. Illinois (1964) and in In re Gault (1967), which gave juveniles due process rights.

Born in Chicago, Illinois, Stevens graduated from Yale University and Yale Law School and entered private practice in New York City and Cincinnati, Ohio. He was appointed judge of the US Court of Appeals for the Sixth Circuit in 1954.
