Pottstown

Borough of Montgomery County, southeastern Pennsylvania, USA, on the Schuylkill River, 59 km/37 mi northwest of Philadelphia; population (1990) 21,800. A trading centre for the surrounding farming, dairy, and industrial region, it also produces structural steel, vehicle parts, rubber and plastic products, and textiles. Pottstown was the site of the region's first iron forge, built in 1716, and its Coventry forge produced the first commercial steel in Pennsylvania in 1732. Hopewell Furnace National Historic Site, a restored 1770s ironmaking community, lies 11 km/7 mi to the southwest.

Other features include Pottsgrove Mansion (1732), used by George Washington during the winter of 1777-78, and the Hill School (1851), a preparatory school.
