Poultney

Town in Rutland County, western-central Vermont, USA, on the Poultney River and the New York border, 24 km/15 mi southwest of Rutland Lake; population (1990) 3,500. It incorporates the villages of Poultney, East Poultney, and South Poultney. Industries include slate quarrying, and the manufacture of quarry machinery, and dairy and maple products. Green Mountain College (1834) is situated in Poultney village, and St Catherine State Park lies to the south, on the 5 km/3mi-long lake.

The editor, publisher, and politician Horace Greeley began his career in East Poultney.
