Pourbus (lived 16th century)

Family of Flemish painters specializing in religious and allegorical works and portraits. They were Pieter Gouda (1510–1584), his son Frans the Elder (1545–1581), and Frans's son Frans the Younger (1569–1622).

Pieter Gouda Pourbus was a painter of religious and allegorical subjects and portraits. He worked mainly in Bruges.

His son Frans Pourbus the Elder was his pupil. He studied under Frans Floris and worked in Antwerp. Like his father, he painted religious subjects and portraits.

Frans Pourbus the Younger painted portraits and was employed at the court of Mantua and, from 1611, by Marie de' Medici, Queen of France, in Paris.

The family history throws light on the economic and artistic decline of Bruges, the rise of Antwerp, and the change in Flemish art due to Italian influence.
