Powell, Claire (1954– )

English mezzo-soprano. She studied at the Royal Academy of Music, London, and at the London Opera Centre. She gave a recital at the Wigmore Hall in 1979 and appeared at Glyndebourne, as Juno in Ulisse and Meg Page in Falstaff(1979–80). From 1980 she performed in London at the Royal Opera House, Covent Garden, in Les Contes d'Hoffmann, A Midsummer Night's Dream, Lulu, and Don Carlos. She made her US debut at San Francisco in 1990, as Maddalena. She appeared with Welsh National Opera, the English National Opera ensemble, Scottish Opera, and Opera North, as Carmen, the Berlioz Marguerite, Gluck's Alceste and Orfeo, Handel's Cornelia, and Cherubino; she sang Eboli with Opera North, in 1993. She made many concert appearances, including Das Lied von der Erde for the Royal Ballet at the Royal Opera House, Covent Garden.
