Powell River

District municipality of Powell River Regional District, southwestern British Columbia, Canada, on the eastern side of the Strait of Georgia, 130 km/80 mi northwest of Vancouver; population (1991) 13,000. It developed in the 1880s as a pulp and paper milling centre, and has become one of the world's largest producers of newsprint. Other industries include tourism, mining, and fishing. Cranberry Lake Wildlife Sanctuary is located within the municipality.
