PowerPC

In computing, microprocessor produced by IBM and Motorola, originally as a challenger to Intel, though now being directed towards industrial uses.

The PowerPC was based on IBM's multichip POWER (Performance Optimization With Enhanced RISC) architecture introduced with the RS/6000 line of Unix workstations and servers 1990. When Apple decided to switch to PowerPC processor, its previous chip supplier, Motorola, switched from its own 88000 RISC processor to join a triumvirate backing the PowerPC. However, the group failed to make any impact on Intel and Apple's sales declined in 1995-97.
