Pozières

Crest in northern France held in World War I by the Germans; it was on rising ground which gave them a command of the Somme battlefield. It was captured by Australian troops during the Battle of the Somme in July 1916; by the time the Australians withdrew in September 1916, they had suffered 23,000 casualties.
