Pozzuoli

Port in Campania, southern Italy, on the Bay of Naples, 13 km/8 mi west of Naples; population (1990) 27,100. It is shaken by some 25 earthquakes a day, 60% of its buildings are uninhabitable, and an eventual major disaster seems inevitable. Products include steel and armaments.

Pozzuoli became a Roman colony in the 2nd century BC. St Paul landed there in AD 61. The town was devastated by earthquakes in 1198 and 1550. There are Roman remains, including an amphitheatre and a half-submerged market place known as the Temple of Serapis. Behind the town is the dormant volcano of Solfatara.
