Praetorian Guard

Body of troops established as the imperial bodyguard of ancient Rome in 27 BC by Augustus. It consisted of up to 16,000 men and was consolidated by the Roman emperors into a permanent standing force in and around the city of Rome. It was disbanded by Constantine I in AD 312.

Its commanders, or prefects, such as Sejanus, were often influential in intrigue and imperial succession.
