Preferential Trade Area for Eastern and Southern Africa

Organization established in 1981 with the object of increasing economic and commercial cooperation between member states, harmonizing tariffs, and reducing trade barriers, with the eventual aim of creating a common market. Its headquarters were in Lusaka, Zambia. It was replaced by Common Market for Eastern and Southern Africa (COMESA) in December 1994.
