presenteeism

Attending work when an employee should be at home. The culture of presenteeism is linked with an economic climate where redundancies, downsizing, and delayering are prevalent. In order to keep their jobs, employees feel the need to be seen doing their job even if there is no work to be done. This means working late, going to work even if ill, and foregoing holidays.

The term was coined by Cary Cooper, a psychologist specializing in organizational management, and is the opposite of absenteeism.
