prestressed concrete

Developed form of reinforced concrete in which tensioned steel cables enclosed in ducts take the place of steel reinforcement. This allows the most efficient use of the tensile strength of steel with the compressive strength of concrete. Its use was pioneered by the French engineer Eugène Freysinnet in the 1920s.
