Preveza

Port and department of Epirus, Greece, at the entrance to the Gulf of Arta; area (department) 1,086 sq km/419 sq mi; population (2001) 59,300. Preveza is the third-largest town of the Epirus region. The main port for the Arta agricultural plain area, it trades in coal, oil, textiles, and agricultural products. The town was founded in the 3rd century BC.

Preveza was occupied by the Venetians between 1499 and 1797, by the French 1797–98, and by the Turks until 1912.
