Prey, Hermann (1929– )

German baritone. He studied at the Berlin Hochschule für Musik with Jaro Prohaska. From 1952 to 1953 he sang at Wiesbaden and then became a member of the Hamburg Staatsoper, where he created Meton in Krenek's Pallas Athene weint (1955). He sang frequently in Berlin at the Städtische Oper, and at the Vienna Staatsoper. He made his New York debut at the Metropolitan Opera House in 1960, as Wolfram; his London debut was made at the Royal Opera House, Covent Garden in 1973, as Rossini's Figaro. Other roles included Papageno, Guglielmo, and Storch in the first British performance of Strauss's Intermezzo (Edinburgh, 1965). He is also well known as a lieder singer. He published his autobiography in 1986.
