Pribilof Islands

Group of four volcanic islands and associated islets, in the Bering Sea, 320 km/200 mi southwest of Bristol Bay, Alaska, USA; total area 168 sq km/65 sq mi. Named after Russian explorer Gerasim Pribilof, who reached them in 1786, they were sold by Russia to the USA in 1867, as part of Alaska. In 1868 the islands were designated a fur-seal reserve, and leased to sealing companies. Overhunting led to a treaty in 1911 which placed the industry under government supervision.

The Aleut people inhabit the largest islands of St Paul (population 800), and St George (100). Otter and Walrus are the other main islands of the group.

Most of the world's fur-seals colonize the Pribilofs as a mating ground. Other wildlife includes polar bear, blue and white fox, otter, and numerous species of bird. Control of the seal herds is regulated by the US Department of the Interior.

The Pribilofs are located at 57°N latitude, 170°W longitude.
