Pribyl, Vilem (1925-1990)

Czech tenor. He sang as an amateur during the 1950s; making his professional debut at Ustí nad Labem in 1961, as Lukas in Smetana's The Kiss. He joined the Janáček Opera, Brno, in the same year, where he was heard as Smetana's Dalibor and Janáček's Laca, in operas by Prokofiev and Shostakovich, and as Radames, Otello, and Lohengrin. He often appeared with the Prague National Opera and sang Dalibor with the company when it visited Edinburgh in 1964 (giving the British premiere of the opera). He was Florestan at the Royal Opera House, Covent Garden, London.
