Price, Leontyne

Price, Leontyne (1927– )

US opera singer. She played a leading singing role in Ira Gershwin's revival of his musical Porgy and Bess 1952–54. Gaining a national reputation, she made her operatic debut in San Francisco in 1957. She appeared at La Scala in Milan in 1959 and became a regular member of the Metropolitan Opera in New York from 1961.

Price was born in Laurel, Mississippi, and educated at Central State College in Ohio. She was trained as a soprano at the Juilliard School in New York.
