Prince George

City in Fraser-Fort George Regional District, central British Columbia, Canada, at the confluence of the Nechako and Fraser rivers, 522 km/324 mi northeast of Vancouver; population (1991) 69,700. A railway junction, the city is the distribution centre for a vast lumbering, mining, and livestock raising region. It has rail repair shops, wood and pulp mills, oil refineries, breweries and bottling plants, and machine shops. Fort George, a North West Company fur trading post, was established here in 1807.

Settlement of the site was spurred by the arrival of the railway in 1913, and the city expanded with the development of its forest products industry in the 1940s.
