Prince of Wales Island| Largest island in the Alexander Arachipelago, southeastern Alaska, USA, 40 km/25 mi west of Ketchikan. Extending for 217 km/135 mi northwest–southeast and 8–64 km/5–40 mi wide, the hilly island rises to 1,218 m/3,996 ft, and has many bays and inlets along its coast. It is a homeland of the Haida peoples, and a centre for lumbering, fishing, and fish processing. Craig, on the west coast, is a supply port for commercial fishing; population (1990) 1,300. |
