principal

In an organ, an open diapason stop. The term is derived from the German Prinzipal to denote a neutral stop, in contrast with the variety of other, more colourful, diapason stops. Also, in early music, the word refers to the lowest trumpet part, in which high and florid notes were not demanded. In modern terminology, a principal is the leading player of any group of orchestral instruments.
