Pritchard, John (1921–1989)

English conductor. He was music director of the London Philharmonic Orchestra 1962–66, the BBC Symphony Orchestra from 1981, He conducted the first performances of Benjamin Britten's Gloriana and Michael Tippett's Midsummer Marriage at Covent Garden, and King Priam with the company at Coventry in 1962.

Pritchard studied in Italy and went to Glyndebourne, England, in 1947, where he gave three Mozart operas in 1951 and was music director 1969–77. He was principal conductor of the Cologne Opera from 1978. He made his US debut in 1953 with the Pittsburgh Symphony Orchestra, and his New York Metropolitan Opera debut in 1971.
