paramilitary

Uniformed, armed force found in many countries, occupying a position between the police and the military. In France such a force is called the Gendarmerie and in Germany the Federal Border Guard. In recent years the term has been extended to include illegal organizations of a terrorist or guerrilla nature.

The Governor has turned the SPLA forces in the State into his private army to intimidate his political rivals and those who oppose his mismanagement of the State's funds.
