lottery

Game of chance in which tickets sold may win a prize. State-sponsored lotteries are an effective means of raising revenue, often used for charitable and other public needs.

In the USA, the players choose numbers that, if selected in a random drawing, can bring the winner millions of dollars. The largest individual lottery win ever recorded occurred in April 1999. A total of $197 million was won with a Big Game ticket and, according to the Massachusetts Lottery Association, was the largest prize ever won by an individual. The largest ever win was split between two ticket holders in Michigan and Illinois in May 2000, at a total of $363 million.
