Probus, Marcus Aurelius (died AD 282)

Roman emperor from AD 276. He served with distinction under Valerian and later emperors in Africa, Asia, and Germany. The emperor Tacitus made him governor of Rome's eastern provinces, and on his death the army proclaimed Probus emperor. He fought successfully against the Germans, driving them out of Gaul, but was murdered by mutinous soldiers.
