Prodigal Son, The

Church parable by Benjamin Britten (libretto by William Plomer), produced at Orford in Suffolk, England, on 10 June 1968, and conducted by Britten himself. The story depicts the biblical parable of the prodigal son. In the country, the father of two sons gives his younger son an inheritance, which is squandered during a moral decline in the city. The son repents and is reconciled with his family on his return home.

Ballet by Prokofiev (L'Enfant prodigue), composed in 1928 and first performed in Paris, on 21 May 1929, by the Ballets Russes (scenario by B Kokno, choreography by George Balanchine, décor by Georges Roualt; conductor Prokofiev).
