Prohaska, Carl

Prohaska, Carl (1869–1927)

Austrian composer. He studied piano with d'Albert and composition with Mandyczewski and Herzogenberg, being also befriended by Brahms. He taught at the Strasbourg Conservatory 1894–95 and conducted the Warsaw Philharmonic Orchestra 1901–05. In 1908, he became professor at the Conservatory of the Vienna Philharmonic Society.

oratorio Frühlingsfeier (1913); motet Aus dem Buch Hiob; Lebensmesse, Der Feind, Infanterie, and other choral works.

Orchestral

variations on a theme from Rousseau's Devin du village, symphonic prelude to Anzengruber's Das vierte Gebot, symphonic fantasy, serenade, passacaglia and fugue for orchestra.

Chamber

string quartet, string quintet, piano trio; sonata and Allegro con spirito for violin and piano; songs, duets.
