Project Gutenberg

Electronic ‘library’ containing hundreds of ‘e-books’ – books made freely accessible via the World Wide Web. The project started in 1971 at the University of Illinois, USA. For copyright reasons, most of the books available are classics dating from before the 20th century, but there are also some current reference books. In October 2003, Project Gutenberg released a DVD containing about 10,000 of its e-books. By 2007, the project's archives held about 21,000 book texts.
