dopamineNeurotransmitter, hydroxytyramine C8H11NO2, an intermediate in the formation of adrenaline. There are special nerve cells in the brain that use dopamine for the transmission of nervous impulses. One such area of dopamine neurons lies in the basal ganglia, a region that controls movement. Patients suffering from the tremors of Parkinson's disease show nerve degeneration in this region. Another dopamine area lies in the limbic system, a region closely involved with emotional responses. It has been found that schizophrenic patients respond well to drugs that limit dopamine excess in this area. How to thank TFD for its existence?
