algorithm

Procedure or series of steps that can be used to solve a problem.

In computer science, it describes the logical sequence of operations to be performed by a program. A flow chart is a visual representation of an algorithm.

The word derives from the name of 9th-century Arab mathematician Muhammad bin Musa al-Khwarizmi.
