Opera by Giacomo Meyerbeer (libretto by Scribe), produced at the Paris Opéra on 16 April 1849. In the story, John's wedding to Berthe is thwarted by Count Oberthal, when he kidnaps John's mother, Fidès. Later John is hailed as a prophet king, and Berthe, horrified, stabs herself. Imperial troops enter John's palace and he detonates himself along with the forces of order.
