prostate gland

Gland surrounding and opening into the urethra at the base of the bladder in male mammals.

The prostate gland produces an alkaline fluid that is released during ejaculation; this fluid activates sperm, and prevents their clumping together. Older men may develop benign prostatic hyperplasia (BPH), a painful condition in which the prostate becomes enlarged and restricts urine flow. This can cause further problems of the bladder and kidneys. It is treated by prostatectomy.

In the USA screening for prostate cancer is widespread, with 240,000 cases diagnosed annually (1995). Around 75% of men report with BHP by the age of 75. Of these, 400,000 annually receive surgery.
