protease
General term for an enzyme capable of splitting proteins. Examples include the digestive proteases pepsin, found in the stomach, and trypsin, found in the small intestine.
Proteases are also found within cells, for example the proteasome, which removes damaged proteins. The AIDS virus, HIV, carries a gene for its own protease, which is vital for its function and hence serves as a target for certain AIDS drugs.
