olmCave-dwelling aquatic salamander. Olms are found in underground caves along the Adriatic seaboard in southeastern Europe. The adult is permanently larval in form, about 25 cm/10 in long, almost blind, with external gills and underdeveloped limbs. See neoteny. (Species Proteus anguinus, family Proteidae.) The olm is the only European member of its family; the other members are the North American mudpuppies. The olm can survive for 12 years without eating. It can also withstand subzero temperatures.
