protostar

In astronomy, early formation of a star that has recently condensed out of an interstellar cloud and which is not yet hot enough for hydrogen burning to start. Protostars derive their energy from gravitational contraction. See Hayashi track.

But, using the Very Large Array of radio telescopes, astronomers from the Harvard-Smithsonian Center for Astrophysics and the Max Planck Institute for Radio Astronomy have identified two protostars located only a few light-years from the galactic center.
Infrared telescopes, such as the Large Binocular Telescope in Arizona, have been used to detect protostars, collections of gas that will eventually form stars, and extrasolar planets.
Shrinking under their own gravity, protostars eventually become dense and hot, and their atoms begin to fuse.
