provincia

In ancient Rome, region of authority of a magistrate holding power in Italy or elsewhere. In the Republic, provinces were determined by the Senate for the consuls and praetors. Under the empire, they were divided into senatorial and imperial; for the latter the emperor himself made the appointments. Additions to the provinces of the Roman empire effectively stopped after Trajan died in AD 117.
