Prudhoe

Prudhoe

Village in Northumberland, England, situated on the south bank of the River Tyne, 16 km/10 mi west of Newcastle upon Tyne; population (2001) 10,200. Prudhoe has a large fertilizer factory.

There are ruins of a Norman castle, built 1161–82 by Odinel de Umfreville, on the site of a British fort. The castle later belonged to the Percy family (Dukes of Northumberland).

Thomas Bewick, the wood engraver, was born in the area.
