Prudhoe Bay

Inlet of the Beaufort Sea, 320 km/200 mi east-southeast of Point Barrow, in north Alaska, USA; population (2000) 5. The 9 mi-/14 km-wide bay and its small community are at the centre of immensely rich petroleum and natural gas fields. These were discovered on the North Slope of Alaska in 1968, and estimated to contain 9.6 billion barrels of oil and 0.73 trillion cubic m/26 trillion cubic ft of natural gas. Prudhoe Bay is now the largest oilfield complex in the USA, producing about 2 million barrels a day. The 1,270-km/789-mi Trans-Alaska Pipeline (1977), carries oil south from the bay to the ice-free port of Valdez on Prince William Sound.
