Przemysl

Industrial city (timber, ceramics, flour milling, tanning, distilling, food processing, gas, engineering) in southeastern Poland; population (1991) 68,500.

History

Founded in the 8th century, it belonged alternately to Poland and Kiev in the 10th–14th centuries. An Austrian territory 1722–1919, it was a frontier fortress besieged by Russian troops September 1914–March 1915 and was occupied by the Germans June 1941–July 1944.
