Opera by Rimsky-Korsakov (libretto by composer based on a play by L A Mey), produced St Petersburg, 13 January 1873. Revived with a new prologue-opera, Boyarina Vera Sheloga, Moscow, 27 December 1898. Ivan the Terrible destroys Novgorod but spares nearby Pskov when he discovers his daughter Olga is there. Tucha, who has not heard of the ceasefire, leads a force against Ivan and Olga is killed in the crossfire.
